Selva Negra is a resort located on a coffee estate that also holds some beautiful virgin cloud forest, up in the mountains in Matagalpa. There are many different activities for the nature enthusiast.

First of all, you can hike one (or more) of the 14 mountain hiking trails. The trails range in difficulty and length, but all lead through the dense cloud forest that is home to almost 200 identified bird species. Besides these abundant birds you can also encounter small mammals (there is a good chance of spotting howler monkeys), reptiles and amphibians. If you take one of the tougher, steeper hikes you will be rewarded with some splendid views of the city of Matagalpa and the mountains surrounding it.

It is also possible to do horseback riding on the resort and on some of the hiking trails as well.

Furthermore, you can see how coffee is grown and processed on the coffee plantation. There are also tours to a greenhouse where flowers grow.

In the Selva Negra Restaurant you can find photos, paintings, tools, and more historical items that tell you the story of the German settlers who arrived in Nicaragua in the 19th century and became coffee growers.

Finally, there is a very charming, rustic chapel tucked away behind the trees where weddings and baptisms can be organized. There are also two separate conference halls with a total capacity of over 500 people.

Entrance to the resort is about $1.50 (C$25) for visitors who come to hike and don't stay overnight.
