Montecristo is a riverside lodge within the Private Montecristo Wildland Reserve, located 43 km from the city of San Carlos, in the department of Río San Juan.

River Lodge has been operating for 8 years and has undergone numerous transformations. Two principal changes have been the conversion to ecotourism and the incorporation of self-sustaining development techniques. The hotel has also ridden itself of all cages for animals, and converted its zoo into a nursery garden. A rescue shelter has been built for wild animals, which has been successful in aiding the recuperation and liberation of ocelots, jaguars, wild pigs, river turtles, and other species.

The hotel offers many recreational activities, such as excursions to the reserve, sport fishing, bird watching, horseback riding, tours to El Castillo and to the archipelago of Solentiname, kayak renting, and much more.

The hotel is ALL INCLUSIVE and charges US$65.00 per person (plus taxes) per night for all rooms. Backpackers pay US$45 per night. The specialty of the restaurant is its barbeque.

There are three means of transportation to reach the lodge. Most convenient, but most expensive, is to take a flight with airline La Costeña from the International Airport Augusto C. Sandino to San Carlos. A second option is to take the ferry from the port of Granada. Alternatively, you can take a boat from the migration wharf in Los Chiles in Costa Rica. Once in San Carlos, it is necessary to take the aquatic public transportation, which leaves for the hotel four times a day.
